The Traherne Arms is one of the oldest Inns where you can rediscover the atmosphere of rural Wales, only four miles from the centre of Cardiff. Relax in comfort in an informal atmosphere with sensational views of Cardiff down to the Bristol Channel. We know there has been a hostelry here at the present site on the Tumble since the early 17th Century.
Until the 19th Century it was known as the Tumbledown Dick Inn, a name reputedly given to it following an incident involving Richard, the son of Oliver Cromwell. On one occasion following an ample lunch in the company of the Jones' of Fonmon Castle, Richard fell off his horse while descending the hill, giving him the alias of Tumbledown Dick.
